The Inner West’s Favourite Family-Friendly Pubs

The Inner West is known for its vibrant pub scene. In this piece we’ve gathered together a selection of our favourite local licensed venues that are great for relaxed meal out with the kids.
 
The Backyard at Briars Sports

The Backyard at Briars Sports is a great place to gather for a shared meal with family and friends. The menu includes all the usual favourites, and kids’ options too, and reasonable prices too. There’s plenty of space for the kids.
 
The Balmain Hotel
72–76 Mullens Street, Balmain

A favourite among Peninsula-dwellers, The Balmain has delicious gourmet food, a lively, kitschy design, an open-air courtyard and a kids’ menu.
 
Birkenhead Hotel
206 Lyons Road, Drummoyne

The Birkenhead Hotel is currently undergoing a renovation but the kitchen, dining and play area are now complete. The current menu is limited but does include several favourites for grown-ups and kids alike. The enclosed play area is sure to keep the littlies happy.

East Village Hotel

The East Village Hotel is a gem tucked at the eastern end of Darling Street, near the Balmain East ferry wharf. The cosy gastro pub has both indoor and outdoor courtyard seating, and is renowned for its Sunday roast and craft beer. The friendly staff welcome families with children.
 
The Garden, Wests Ashfield Leagues Club

A recently launched dining venue within Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, The Garden is a great place for a relaxed family meal. True to its name, The Garden is situated in an al fresco conservatory with abundant flowers and greenery and attractive decor. Seasonal fresh produce, sourced directly from farmers, is prominent in the various shared plates and mains on offer. For the littlies, there is an excellent menu that offers goodness and a play area too. Even better, The Garden has just launched a kids’ entertainment night on Tuesday evenings between 6 and 8 pm, with entertainers providing face painting and balloon creations.

Golden Barley Hotel, Enmore

A fine example of Art Deco architecture and a longtime Inner West institution, the Golden Barley Hotel’s newly renovated bistro provides an inviting place to relax and enjoy a meal with the kids. The bistro menu offers a wide range of snacks, share plates, substantial mains and a kids’ menu.
 
The Henson
91 Illawarra Road, Marrickville

The Henson is a Marrickville institution. The revamped Art Deco beauty is loved by locals and families across the Inner West. The pub offers a diverse selection of food with a focus on good-quality, seasonal and sustainable produce. A separate kids’ menu has an appealing selection with some healthy options. Best of all for families, there is a play area for the kids to roam.
 
 
Native Rose Hotel
68 Victoria Road, Rozelle

The fully renovated Native Rose Hotel is another great options for families wishing to dine out with the kids. The menu includes all the usual pub favourites, such as nachos, schnitzel, burgers and steaks. There is a separate menu for children aged under 12 years, and approximately 20 high chairs are available for use. There is a large kids’ corner with a play kitchen, toys, building blocks, books, a chalkboard, TVs, and small tables and chairs.

North Annandale Hotel

Located at the intersection of Johnston and Booth Streets, in the heart of Annandale, the newly renovated North Annandale Hotel is a boon for local families. The expanded bar area includes indoor and outdoor dining areas, and an all-important kids’ play space. The kids’ menu features traditional favourites and activity bags are provided with meals.
 
Petersham Bowling Club
77 Brighton Street, Petersham

The Petersham Bowling Club has a long history as one of the state’s oldest bowling clubs. Saved from re-development, the multipurpose pokie-free venue provides a warm, vibrant atmosphere with the bowling green, a great selection of food and beverages and live music. In fact, the PBC is so welcoming to families, it’s a popular location choice for children’s birthday parties.
 
Salisbury Hotel
118 Percival Road, Stanmore

The Salisbury Hotel has been so thoughtfully renovated, and this stylish, inviting venue with welcoming staff is now a firm favourite among Stanmore locals. This is a pub that you kids will genuinely love going to. The highlight for them, of course, is climbing the fabulous 1926 red Dennis brewery truck in the beer garden. The menu features the usual pub favourites, such as burgers and schnitzel, as well as healthier gourmet options. There are regular weekly food and entertainment specials too, such as ‘Taste of Singapore’ on Tuesday nights, with a Singaporean menu inspired by the chef’s heritage, and the ‘Salisbury Sessions’ on Sunday nights, with a Sunday roast on the menu and live music. The kids menu has a bunch of child-friendly options to keep little bellies satisfied, and there are ample high chairs available. The Loft provides an additional play area with entertainment for the kids on Monday and Friday nights from 5–8 pm.
