An Intergenerational Playgroup Right Here in Our Inner West

We welcomed the first day of spring on Tuesday 1st September, along with our first Uniting Play at Aldersgate House.
Aldersgate is a beautiful large bright aged care facility with small cosy lounge areas fantastic staff and a stimulating activity program for the residents. Our first playgroup took place in the memory loss unit downstairs, whilst upstairs on a Tuesday you can hear the sound of a piano being played and people singing to some old fashion tunes.
The memory loss lounge where we conducted our play group was a lot quieter as the residents were either sitting around a table painting with the assistance of an art therapist or just gazing at each other…well up until 12 children and babies stroll in with their parents for playtime.
The children headed straight to the play mat to chomp on plastic food and play with the blocks. The elderly residents headed straight for the children, one lady who does not speak English and usually keeps herself busy by walking around collecting things sat calmly, just listened and watched the children play. Some of the residents also have limited verbal communication and are chair-bound but a cuddle from a baby was enough to make a connection with a world that most of the time they feel quite lost in.
The children got something out of this interaction too, speaking to some of the parents their children either didn’t have grandparents or the grandparents lived overseas and the children who did see their grandparents regularly just enjoyed having even more grown up attention.
My Dad was one of these residents and this was the first time in a long time I saw him smile.
Thank you mummies, children and babies for participating in our first Uniting Play and we welcome you to join us again!
Without you we cannot make this happen and it was one of the most rewarding experiences witnessed by all the carers and visitors at Aldersgate, the smiles were priceless!
Our vision is to see both families and residents receive positive outcomes and to be able to run these types of Playgroups across nursing homes in the inner west and more.
