Catching Up Education provides effective literacy instruction grounded in evidence-based practices to help struggling readers from kindergarten to high school become confident readers in a short span of time. If your child reads slowly, laboriously, is uncertain about sight words, reads word-by-word, ignores punctuation, makes many errors, has poor comprehension and spelling then Catching Up Education is for you. Following an initial assessment, I will find what skills students have and help fill in the gaps in their knowledge with direct and explicit tutoring of these skills. Areas of focus include phonological awareness, reading including systematic phonics instruction, reading fluency, spelling and comprehension. Students will be motivated in the program to follow a series of strategies including instruction and modelling, repeated reading and progress monitoring. These strategies are designed to maximise the time a student spends reviewing letter names and sounds, learning phonics patterns, and using this knowledge to decode single to multisyllable words. During learning sessions students of all ages will read interesting fiction and non fiction texts, make predictions, answer questions and retell the story to improve comprehension.
