The life of an entrepreneur mum is a roller-coaster ride of thrills and spills. Real Entrepreneur Mums co-founder Sophie Musumeci reflects on her journey in creating a platform for mums in business to connect.
In 2016 my business partner Alison Valenti and myself (Sophie Musumeci) asked ourselves the question, if there was a perfect platform for mums in business to connect, build relationships and gain support for their success, what would that look like? We did our research on what was currently offered by other organisations but realised there was a massive gap and we knew that we had the skill, passion and desire to create that solution.
At the very beginning we designed a very simple information sheet on our idea and tapped 20 local women in business on the shoulder and asked them to meet with us. Over a cup of coffee, we shared our vision and plan to launch Real Entrepreneur Mums. They all loved the idea and could see how it would benefit them in their business.
Real Entrepreneur Mums is a business referral group that focuses on building strong relationships to help each other grow and succeed. We started with just one group in the Hills District and since then have grown across Sydney (including here in the Inner West), Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane, with future plans to go global.
As a mum of two young children, Toby, six, and Stella, four, I know that being an entrepreneur mum really is a juggling act you constantly need to work at. The responsibility and commitments of your business are pressure enough, but then you mix in expectations to pick up the kids from school, take them to all their activities, cook, clean, tackle homework and tuck them into bed before you log back onto the computer for further meetings and work. I’ve really had to learn the art of balance – and even then, that’s a skill in itself.
Being a ‘mumpreneur’ has its challenges, but it’s a journey that allows us to know that we’re chasing our dreams whilst we still have our children. As business owners, we have founded an inspiring business that has seen a massive positive impact on hundreds of women and as mothers, we are teaching our children that they can be a parent and not put their career dreams on hold.
It’s a tough journey at times, no doubt, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
